After your new sod has been installed by Erindale Landscaping Plus there are important steps you need to follow. Keeping your new lawn beautiful and green requires immediate attention. You must start caring for your grass the same day it is installed. Follow these guidelines for best results:
1. PROPER WATERING:
Your new sod requires more watering than a regular, established lawn because the roots need much more water to allow for consistent moisture and growth. Provide enough water to thoroughly soak the first few inches of soil below the sod for the first week to 10 days of installation.
Depending on the weather, keep your new sod suitably moist with about 20 to 30 minutes of watering, two to three times each day. It is best to water your lawn in the early morning, then mid-afternoon, and finally, in the early evening.
After about three weeks, you can begin watering every other day. After about one month you can begin watering as you would an established lawn, since the roots of your new sod should have penetrated the soil. At is time the best schedule for watering your new sod is in the morning or early evening to allow maximum moisture absorption and retention.
2. LIMIT FOOT TRAFFIC:
Try not to step on your new sod for the first week to 10 days after installation. It is important to keep foot traffic light for one month as the roots of your new sod will be newly established and can be damaged by frequent foot traffic and too much weight.
3. FERTILIZATION GUIDELINES:
You will not need to fertilize your new sod immediately as it was likely fertilized before harvesting. Wait about one month for the sod to establish its roots in the soil of your lawn. After one month, apply a granular fertilizer which activates upon contact with moisture. It is important to follow the instructions on the fertilizer packaging for the best results. Remember that over-fertilizing can cause potential damage to your new sod.
4. MOW YOUR NEW LAWN:
Mow your sod with a push mower when the grass is about 3.5 to 4 inches high – a bit longer than you would generally allow your grass to grow. Do not use a riding mower since it is too heavy and can damage the sod. Once the grass has grown to this length, be sure your blades are sharp, and always avoid cutting it too short.
